RANDOM WIDTH floor- California Chestnut
For a more traditional look, many of our
clients select a random or mixed width floor. Historically,
hardwood lumber was always milled from the log into various widths,
based on the size and grade of the tree. Obviously, slicing a
round log generates a variety of board widths.
Our great-grandfathers, never wasting a splinter of
wood, made their homes and floors out of these varied width planks.
And that vintage look is easily re-created with our random or mixed width plank
floors.
For efficiency, we run our floors right to the inch width (3,4,5,6,7 &
8" face width for most species). So you can choose whatever multiple
width look you like, but there are 2 specific styles:
TRADITIONAL RANDOM WIDTHS-
A better price because there is very little waste in
manufacturing. We package per width and provide a tally list of
exactly how much of each you will receive to facilitate a simple
installation. And we create a laying guide to help get you
started. Truly the most traditional and historically accurate hardwood
floor, a random width floor also looks the most "natural" as you really
see that you made the most of the tree.
REPEATING PATTERN MIXED WIDTHS- Typically 2 or 3
different widths. Once you decide on a pattern that will repeat
itself throughout the space, we can calculate exactly how much of each
we'll need to ship you. Also called "equal lineal footage". We've
found 4,5,6 or 4,6,8 to be popular patterns we ship a lot of. A great
way to get the look and feel of a wide plank floor without having to pay
for all of the boards to be big.
